It should come as no surprise that many of us often take our skin for granted. It’s important to understand that our skin is subject to rough conditions such as late nights, dehydration, chemicals and make-up, to name a few. It must therefore be robust to withstand a lot of destruction but we also have to give it the TLC it deserves.
If we begin to neglect proper skincare, eventually all of the dirt and dehydration will simply take their toll. Spots, oiliness or dryness can become daily problems. Flaky elbows and flaky knees are not the most desirable look – especially when applying fake tan. Fine lines and wrinkles emerge on the face and establish themselves as permanent features, not to mention those under eye bags and sagging!
You should introduce pampering into your daily routine to effectively care for your skin.
Here are our 4 top tips to help get you started:
Regardless of whether you wear make-up or not, daily facial cleansing is an absolute necessity. You need to categorise facial cleansing with the same level of importance as brushing your teeth. You wouldn’t leave the house without brushing your teeth, would you?
Don’t just reach for a cleansing wipe or the old school method of soap and water; find a facial cleanser for your skin type. It is worthwhile getting an analysis and recommendation from a skincare expert. There is no one size fits all approach when it comes to cleansing products and choosing the wrong cleanser can in fact do more harm than good.
As skin cells die, the exterior appearance of your skin can look dull and tired. Most people’s attempt to rejuvenate tired, dull looking skin simply involves lathering it in moisturiser. However, this results in little improvement, as dead skin never comes back to life.
Buffing and exfoliating is key to maintaining healthy skin. It not only rids your skin of dead cells but it works by purifying and detoxifying it of toxins and enhancing cell renewal. If dry brushing is too harsh for you, try using a salt or sugar body scrub and use exfoliating gloves to clean and nourish the body while you take a bath or shower.
A chemical peel can also be used to remove the outer most layer of the skin, ridding the face and neck of dead skin cells. Although this treatment may sound scary, it doesn’t usually cause a great deal of pain for patients. Most only feel a slight sting during treatment.
“Wear sunscreen. If I could only offer you one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it”. Baz Luhrmann’s famous lyrics say it all – sun protection is imperative for your skin. Premature ageing, skin discolouration, loss of elasticity, sunspots and skin cancer are the real-life threats of prolonged exposure to UV rays.
Of course, everybody is aware of these threats but the temptation of a tan often proves too much. Then there’s also the ignorance of sun protection on the not-so-sunny days to consider. The golden rule is to wear sunscreen every day. Purchase a moisturiser and foundation with built-in SPF to ensure you stay protected from UV rays each day.
If not for aiding detoxing or weight management, you must at the very least ensure to meet your recommended daily water intake for the sake of your skin. If you ever complain about dryness, dullness or flakiness of the skin, fine lines and dark circles, your water intake is likely to blame. Your skin does a whole lot for you and it doesn’t ask for much, just a regular water intake – that’s definitely a skin care regime that anyone can manage and afford.
Keeping your skin looking fresh and rejuvenated requires daily commitment – but the ten minutes you spare to care for your skin is certainly worthwhile. Start implementing all of the above into your daily routine and your future self with thank you for it!
