What is a Vampire Facial?
Also known as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatment, a vampire facial is a procedure whereby blood is drawn from an area of the patient’s body, the platelets are separated from the drawn blood and then injected into a specific area. The separation of the platelets from the blood is done through a process called ‘centrifugation’. The reason for extracting the platelets from the other elements found in blood is because these cells contain a high concentration of growth factors.
As well as being used to treat injuries, the vampire facelift can also be used to make the skin appear smoother and revitalised by reducing lines and wrinkles. Using this kind of facial with facial fillers can plump up many areas of the face such as the cheeks.
What Areas can be Treated?
A vampire facial is not only used on the face but blood can also be injected into other areas of the body such as the knee, neck and back of hands. Sports stars including Tiger Woods and Rafael Nadal have previously benefitted from the treatment to help their injuries.
What to Expect During Treatment
Depending on the area being treated, the procedure usually takes between 45-60 minutes. This time includes:
- The application of a local anesthetic
- Taking the blood sample
- Centrifugation to separate the platelets from the blood
- Injecting the platelets into the area to be treated
The procedure doesn’t hurt but it may be uncomfortable and sting as with any of our treatments. However, the local anesthetic is often applied to reduce any discomfort you may experience.
